Class Name: UPS Location 2D

Superclass - Location 2D

Definition

A coordinate within the Universal Polar Stereographic (PS) 2D Spatial Reference Frame (SRF).

The Universal Polar Stereographic projection-based Spatial Reference Frame is a planar, conformal projection placed tangent to the Object Reference Model/Earth Reference Model (ORM/ERM) at either of the two poles. When secant, intersection with the ORM/ERM occurs along a parallel of latitude; alternatively this can be expressed as a "central scale factor". The locations of the poles are defined by the ORM/ERM.

When used to define a 2D coordinate system, the resulting X and Y axes are measured in meters (rather than arc degrees), with the origin located at the parametrically specified pole. The Y axis lies along (and is positive along) a parametrically defined meridian; the X axis is perpendicular to the Y axis and is oriented to form a 2D right-handed coordinate system.

The UPS SRF extends the PS SRF by specifying the meridian of the positive Y axis, and the central scale factor.

The central scale factor is always 0.994, thus "lowering" the plane of the projection to intersect the ORM/ERM at approximately 81 degrees, 7 minutes latitude.

The UPS SRF is only defined to the 79 degree 30 minute parallel, where the effective scale reaches a maximum of 1.0023916.

See the SEDRIS Spatial Reference Model (SRM) for additional details.

FAQs

How does the Universal Polar Stereographic SRF relate to the Polar Stereographic SRF?
The UPS SRF is a derivation of the PS SRF that specifies the values of two of the PS SRF parameters (scale and meridian) for use by U.S. DoD information systems and maps. The UPS SRF relates to the PS SRF in much the same way that each of the UTM SRFs individually relate to the TM SRF.
